What Is Smart Charging for Electric Vehicles?

Learn About Smart Charging for New Energy Electric Vehicles?

When charging station suppliers introduce their products, many tout their support for smart charging. So what exactly is smart charging?

Learn About Smart Charging for Electric Vehicles

In fact, smart charging can be divided into two categories: residential smart charging and commercial smart charging. Today, we will focus on the commercial applications of smart charging.

Load Balancing

A charging station load management system reduces energy consumption during peak demand periods, ensuring that the energy requirements of electric vehicles do not exceed the grid’s capacity and preventing overloads or power outages. At the same time, it optimizes electric vehicle charging.

For commercial applications, when multiple EV chargers are connected to the same circuit, the local load management system allows you to determine how much power each charger can consume. Once configured, the chargers will automatically use your selected protocol to balance the power available to each charger simultaneously, while keeping energy consumption below the maximum power rating.

Taking a 60kW DC fast-charging station as an example: when two vehicles are charging simultaneously, each vehicle is allocated 30kW of power. When one vehicle is fully charged and leaves, the power allocated to the remaining vehicle gradually increases to 60kW (in practice, the specific values depend on the maximum power range that the vehicle can accept).

Smartphone Control

Many electric vehicle charging stations support remote control via smartphone, enabling users to locate charging stations, schedule charging sessions, remotely monitor and control the charging process, and view historical charging data.

As electric vehicles (EVs) grow in popularity, smart charging features are set to become a major trend in the future.
